Finding Peace in the Midst of Chaos
Have you ever been in a phase of life where it feels like you just can’t catch your breath? In our lives, we will all face trials (John 16:33). The struggles and the pains will arise. But, even when things feel overwhelming, there are ways for us to find peace and joy. All of these ways have one thing in common, and that is our perspective. As Christians, we can turn to our Heavenly Father who is the true source of peace and joy. Leaning into His presence is the key to this source. It also allows us to remind ourselves that He is in control.
Next, let’s explore other ways that we can help maintain our peace and joy in the midst of trials. In every situation we face, there are aspects that we can control. A commonly used tool in counseling is the circle of control. Inside the circle, you place everything over which you have control. Sometimes these things can be a challenge to identify, but there are always a few things that you have control over: your response, your actions, your words, your perspective, etc. Outside of the circle, you list things that are out of your control. This includes world events, anything involving others, the past, the future, etc. Once you have completed your list, you must be honest with yourself about where you have been focusing. Are you focusing on what is inside or outside of your circle of control?
As Christians, the next step is super important. Anything that you are focusing on that is outside of your circle of control does not belong to you … it belongs to God! Furthermore, as His children, He is waiting for us to take our problems to Him. Personally, I like to visualize myself physically handing these things over to God. We might not be able to control these things, but He can. Whether it be healing from your past, world events, or issues with other people, God is the source we can turn to for help. Can I get an amen? What would happen if we started handing things over to God that are outside of our control? Have you considered that the reason you are feeling overwhelmed is because you are trying to carry a burden that is not meant for your to carry? Ask God to show you what you can control. Are there adjustments you need to make in your responses, thought processes, attitudes, actions, etc. If He shows you something to change, this is where your focus should be.
Shifting our focus can be life changing … I’m not going to lie to you. This takes practice and determination. It isn’t easy to focus on our circle of control when things are coming at us that we are unable to control. The good news is that it isn’t impossible. So, I’ll leave you with a few questions … where are you focusing? Are there some things you need to change?
